For those gardeners who move frequently and require a garden on the go, a portable garden offers plenty of solutions. When it's time to move your garden elsewhere, you simply pick up items like a portable planter box. We'll help you win the weekend with these fun projects.

Why Plant in Portable Garden Beds

Portable garden beds are an ideal solution for just about any type of garden. Purchase or make your own mobile garden with wheels, and you can easily move the garden bed around as needed. Say hello to a bounty of fresh produce at your fingertips.

If you grow vegetables throughout the season, raised garden beds on wheels make it possible to move around the bed in order to catch the most sunlight. Doing so also makes it possible to move the beds closer to your backdoor at harvest time. Rather than having to go out into the garden, you can simply gather homegrown produce right outside the kitchen door.

Use wooden crates for your portable garden.

What to Grow in a Portable Garden

When it comes to growing a portable garden, the options are nearly limitless. Do you enjoy cooking with fresh herbs? Try creating your own portable herb garden. A wide variety of herbs thrive in portable garden boxes. You can enjoy abundant fresh herbs like basilrosemarythymesagechives, and cilantro.

In a portable vegetable garden, you can grow almost anything you would in the ground. You can plant and enjoy yummy vegetables like green beanscucumberseggplantpeascorn, and much more.

It's important to make sure that the structure of your portable vegetable garden is at least 18 to 24 inches deep. This will ensure you can grow deep-rooted vegetable plants, such as potatoes and tomatoes. More shallow-rooted crops, like lettuces and various greens, require at least a 12-inch depth.

Portable flower beds allow you to create pockets of color throughout your landscape. Fill up portable garden boxes with eye-catching flowers sure to turn heads. When you plant your portable flower beds, make sure to separate sun- and shade-loving plants into different raised beds. If you try mixing shade and sun plants, you'll have dieback on the flowers that aren't in the right lighting conditions.

Make a DIY Portable Garden

You can make a mobile vegetable garden that allows you to comfortably plant and harvest your favorite crops. It's possible to build a raised bed with legs and even wheels, which allows you to easily reach, plant, and move the portable garden when necessary.

Here are some tips for how to build a portable vegetable garden, including how to build raised garden bed with legs:

  • Portable planters are usually made from rot-resistant wood, stone, or brick. For mobility, wood is the best choice. You can build a portable garden from scratch, or get a kit from your home and garden center.
  • When building from wood, make sure to use decking screws rather than nails. This will ensure that the structure stays together and remains stable. Cement stone and brick together, which will avoid leakage.
  • To build a raised garden bed with legs, use wood or metal. The standard height from the ground for such a garden is usually 27 inches. To avoid arm strain, construct the bed so that it is no more than three feet across. Drill drainage holes on the bottom of the planter. Put the legs on casters so you can easily move your portable garden.
